Key Features:
*The true story of an American Paratrooper who became a POW on the first evening of Operation Market Garden when he was stunned by an explosion from a German “88” and left for dead by his patrol.
*Remarkable record of the compelling wartime experiences of a member of the 82nd Airborne, 508th pir.
Left for Dead at Nijmegen relives the larger-than-life experiences of an American Paratrooper from his high school math class, through an extra-ordinary training regimen, into the very front line of the first assault on the road bridge at Nijmegen, Holland; and into captivity. He was injured and knocked unconscious during an intense fire-fight. After almost being executed on-the-spot by a furious “SS” soldier he was dragged to an interrogation by Heinrich Himmler, surrounded by machine gun toting “SS” maniacs, deep in the bowels of an ancient castle in Nijmegen.
As he stood before the Reichsfuhrer of Germany he considered the box of 144 condoms handed to him by a jovial British lieutenant as he boarded his C-47 to have been, at best, a bad joke. Following his interrogation Himmler directed him to take a seat on the plush red-carpeted floor alongside him where he was brought a hot dinner…the last dinner he would be provided until the final days of the war.
It was only the beginning of what would prove to be eight harrowing months under the thumb of the Nazi High Command. He would witness carnage, mass murder, executions, risk his life to save a severely wounded fellow paratrooper, suffer extreme deprivation, be used as slave labor and continuously dodge death at the hands of the Germans, Allied artillery and both British and American airpower.
Eventually he would escape, only to be recaptured within sight of the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland. Liberation would bring with it an entirely new and unexpected series of both difficult, as well as, humorous events.
